Web Essentials '05: Bringing a Web conference to the Web

Last week I spoke at Web Essentials '05, an invigorating conference in Sydney, Australia. The folks attending were so engaged and excited; the other speakers brilliant and provocative. And our host John Allsopp took us out for post-conference surfing at Bondi. Nice!

What really set this even apart, though, was the organizers' willingness to experiment with extending the conference conversation beyond the two days. I was surprised with the extent these technologies really helped bring the event together, including an aggregated "WE05" tag for blog posts at Technorati and photos at Flickr. And, they've offered a Podcst subscription to the MP3 audio of all the sessions.

In that spirit, I've made my two presentations available as PDF downloads, with associated audio links under a Creative Commons Attribution License. The audio and slides aren't synced, so you'll have to try to keep up on your own. But the end result may give you incentive to join the party next year. Enjoy.

Thankyou for such inspiring presentations Jeff, for my part you were the highlight of the conference, you had my head bursting at the seams with thoughts of where we go from here.

The whole event was well executed, even with 25% of the audience suffering from hey fever after the evacuation incident you weren't distracted, well done and thankyou for sharing you enthusiasm.

Now I wait for next year and hope it is as good (I don't doubt it will be).

Cheers!

Actually it's Bondi. May I also point out we have much nicer beaches in Western Australia? :) Shame I live 4000kms away from Sydney - look forward to checking out the podcasts though! Thanks.

Hehe. It's Bondi, not Bondai :)

James at least six people from Perth made it to WE05 and there were attendees from Iceland and Finland. You need to start saving now for WE06, I know I am.

And the chances of getting Jeff to Perth are pretty remote after he found out we don't have any real hills to cycle.

So listen to the podcasts, view the presentations and be very jealous of the people who attended Jeff's full day workshop and WE05. I learnt a lot, thank you Jeff and I hope to see you next year at WE06.

Two truly great presentations. Too bad the audio recording from the Web 2.0 one was cut off two thirds into the presentation.

RE: Bondai vs. Bondi - sometimes the Aussie accent leads to unintended phonetic spelling. Not that the North Americans are any better, of course.

One of the funniest moments of the conference was when Eric Meyer typed "margin-roight:" in a CSS presentation, and then pronounced it as such. The local audience, thankfully, found it hilarious.

Nice work Jeff, especially your enthusiasm is quite nice listening to being a little enthusiastic myself ..

could we, by any chance, get the full version of the last presentations podcast? :)

Actually, Bondai is kinda cool

1. Because that's how its pronounced (as I pointed out to Tantek Bondie is a disgraced former tycoon, whom Americans might have heard of because he won the Americas cup in 1983)

2. Because it is a little like "Banzai", and with loads of Japanese surfer doods in Bondi, that seems appropriate somehow

Thanks so much again Jeff, and keep in mind the sharks in Perth :-)

Very charmed to have met you and very impressed with your appreciation of the heavily guarded Reynell :) I’m thinking a ‘bottle off’ would be fun, but I’m not sure that they’d survive crossing the pacific…

Incidentally, do you know the graphic on you home page is the Auslan sign (Australian sign language) for Interpreter…? Not sure if it’s the same in ASL but Eric might know.

Anyhow, what a great week it was, and very, very funny.

Lisa ;)

Unfortunately the audio for the "Designing for Web 2.0" talk cuts out after 25 minutes (while talking about tagging). Does anyone have a more complete version?

Even though I wasn't at the conference I'm enjoying the talk.

Thanks for a most inspirational talk Jeff! As Peter mentions above, I'm now also fizzing with ideas :)

I really appreciate you offering your presentation online. For those of us that aren't able to attend conferences this is a great asset.

Unfortuneately, the audio from Web 2.0 ends after 25 minutes for me too. Is there a complete version of the audio that you could post?

Really good idea, I enjoied the presentation.

A little typo error: The italian rider is gino bartali, not bartoli.

How could I possibly invite you as a priviledge speaker for our conference on 2nd of Dec.?

My company is KIPA, Korea IT Industry Promotioon Agency, an affiliated Organization of Ministry of Information & Communications.

We run an annual convention and in this time, we would like to make a session on "Web Standard, Web Accessibility,.."
Actually, you've been proposed from us around April though, with several reason the conference was cancelled. This conference isn't the same one. It is specialised for SW and business.

I really wish to get your feedback with positive response.
By the way, we would happily compensate all your travel expense and your speech if you come over.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Thanks for the workshop, Jeffrey, good stuff. I was sorry to not make it to the other two days of the conference, but I'll plan it better for next year. because you're coming back, right? :)

Anyways, Donna was going to introduce me during breaks, but we got sidetracked into coffee and food. I wanted to ask if you're now planning a revised or new book? *grin* Oh, and how dare you make me all drooling with your measuremap and then leave me out in the cold like this? So. When is it ready? :)

Bummer about only having half the podcast, but at least we've got the slides. I'll just hum the rest! ;)

Cheers!
