Irony (and the 4th of July)
"You know you're in an era of irony when the unintended irony is by far more ironic than anything intentionally, self-consciously ironic."
-- paraphrased sentiment expressed by a friend of mine as we watched Seattle's beautiful Lake Union 4th of July fireworks show last week. In the background, a radio blared a supposedly show-synchronized soundtrack provided by a local radio station, complete with songs like Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" (predictably), Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" (wha?), and the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right (To Party)" (oh, right, we're still sort of fighting a distant war to ensure our unsustainable lifestyle is sustained, aren't we?).
