Deeper into the mind of a toddler

Intensely coloring I was inspired recently by the hilarious Linda from Purple is a Fruit, who herself has a brilliant toddler, to come up with my own list of why I think Sophia is a regular ol’ child prodigy:

  • Can count to 10.
  • Can name all the colors of the rainbow.
  • Can identify most basic shapes (triangle, rectangle, circle, square, heart, star, oval, etc.)
  • Can sing the ABCs with a little prompting and can identify more than 3/4 of the letters of the alphabet by sight.
  • Can jump, spin, somersault and dance on command.
  • Will sit and read by herself for long stretches. When I read to her she regularly “reads” along, reciting lines out of each story with the various sound effects and voices she’s heard us do.
  • Knows both the sign and word for most of the important objects in her life.

There's a little bit of the crazy in there, too. But, lest I get too high on the intoxicating scent of full-ride Ivy League scholarships, let me quickly remind myself why Sophia is still an all-around goofball who might not be ready for AP classes just quite yet:

  • Has been known to “wash hands” with anything she decides is soap at the time. Some examples include: sticky rice, lotion and the dog.
  • Many times when reciting numbers out loud she pretends she is The Count from Sesame Street, complete with the “Ah, ah, ah” at the end of each number.
  • Will break out into wild and girly screams and squeals for no apparent reason several times a day, usually followed by a few flailing-armed laps around the coffee table.
  • Is always distracted by shiny things. (But, then again, so am I.)
  • Still poops her pants.

Aaahahaha! I love it! She is so awesome - I can’t wait to hang out again next weekend!

Someone once told me that the toddler years give us a glimpse into what puberty is going to be like for that particular child- God help us all!

T–we can’t wait to hang out with you, too!
Ahna–that is absolutely hilarious, and, if true, we’re in for several good years of drama ahead of us. God help us all, indeed!

My dad taught us to count using the Ah, ah ah too! I outgrew it and eventually majored in math in university. She may be a genius yet!
