Joys of little fingers
Sophia’s hands are all over the place lately. Being the inquisitive 16-month-old that she is, she’s been getting herself into a lot of mischief these days. On a recent exploration of the orifices on my head, she shoved her little finger right up my nose. Like seriously up there. Jabby little fingers + uncut death nails = mommy nosebleed!
On that note, I decided that despite the chaos and destruction, it was due time to remind myself that those little digits are still my favorite around — that they are the creators of a lot of fun, and are not just injury-inducers and clutter-causers.
I give you my Top 5 Favorite Things her hands are up to these days.
1. Harrasing dog: Sophia’s dog petting (or, more acurately, grabbing) has reached a new level of cute lately. She calls for the dog first thing in the morning and last thing at night. And when she can manage it, she’s got those chubby little hands all over the dog’s mess of hair, handfuls of which can be found in every area of our lives — our food, our beds, my black peacoat, Sophia’s mouth.
2. Waving and signing: I can’t reiterate it enough how cool it is to be able to communicate with my toddler who only speaks about 10 words.
3. Making music: Those little fingers plunk out “melodies” on the piano and strumma strumma on daddy’s guitar. And she’s drumming on anything she can get her hands on these days. Girl’s got rhythm!
4. Brushing teeth: Although she doesn’t have many (there are about 4 breaking through her gums right now…finally!), she grabs for her toothbrush whenever we get even remotely near the bathroom. Once she gets her little hands on that thing, she’s captivated. That is until something sparkly catches her eye and the poor soggy brush is abandoned on the floor, covered in dog hair, of course. Regardless, it’s cute that she cares about her hygiene.
5. Hugging and holding hands: This has got to be my absolute favorite thing her little hands are doing these days. She reaches for me and just holds on, not wanting to let go of my embrace (well, not as quickly, at least). She still pushes me away when she’s done being smothered with kisses, but she’s been initiating the lovefest much more often lately.
I love those sticky little hands, and I’ll hold onto ‘em wherever she leads. Even if I do end up with a bloody nose from time to time.
