16 months and counting…

Playin' tunes Happy 16 month birthday, Sophia!

The months just keep flying by as you’re quickly learning more and more about life. Hanging out with you is like attending a crash course on living. “See that? You better remember that. You’re going to need to know that tomorrow. Oh, and the next day.” But the amazing thing is that you are checking it all out, and you are remembering! I’m impressed by the little details you are storing and remembering from day to day. Not just signs and words, either. But people and tastes and songs. It’s pretty cool watching your brain work.

As I write this, you’re sick (again) with a cold. Last week it was the flu, and just when you finally got over that and got your appetite back you caught the cold. And I can definitely say with authority that snot is not your favorite accessory. It’s not really mine either — I know this because it’s currently all over my jeans and t-shirt from wiping you off all evening.

Big news for this month: You are TEETHING! Why is it a big deal that my toddler is teething? Because these will be your first teeth. Yes, 16-months-old. No teeth. You’ve made due so far with really hard gums, but I have to say, your gums are ready for a break. Those teeth will be put to good use. I will miss that big gummy grin though. And I’ll miss watching you brush those gums every morning with your pink toothbrush. But watching you brush actual teeth will be so much better.

We just made it through the holidays, and you loved it all. Mostly because we kept it really low-key so you wouldn’t get overwhelmed. It was perfect. Simply perfect.
Dog pile! Literally.
You’re talking much more, too, which is really helpful when, say, we need to point out an owl or to know that a cow says moo. All very useful words and sounds to have in your repertoire, for sure. But I think this might be another case of a language only a mother could understand because sometimes when I step outside of our conversations and just listen, I think how hilarious it is that I can actually understand everything you’re telling me. It’s a lot of yammering and babbling and music to my ears. I don’t think I can ever get tired of hearing “Mama, up!” as I pull you into my lap and hold you tight.

We’ve definitely had a fun start to this new year, and I’m expecting lots of entertaining and exciting surprises from you in the coming months. I love you!
