I smell fried food!

The L.A. County Fair!

If you haven’t noticed, I love this time of year. The weather cools down. The leaves start to brown and fall. The nights get crisp and awesome-smellin’. And…the Fair comes to town. This weekend we tapped into our inner carnies with full force.

Chris and I hadn’t been to the Fair in a couple of years. We were remembering recently that the last time we went we realized with a hint of sadness that maybe we had outgrown the kitschy novelty that is the L.A. County Fair (if you click that link, I’m sure you’ll understand). We both grew up just minutes away from Pomona, the Fair’s hometown, and I think we must have overdosed on years of funnel cake, Piggly Wiggly, death rides, Big Slide and a whole slew of infomercial-type household products that you don’t need but that the demonstrator dudes convince you to buy. In a nutshell, we had become numb to the enchanting siren call of the Fair.

The guys rode this ride... But then we had a kid. And I realized why the Fair was created in the first place. It’s for kids! I had forgotten! Bringing Sophia with us to the Fair this weekend brought out the inner child living inside us — instantly we couldn’t get to the animal barn fast enough or choose between all of the fast rides. And the Fair food. Oh, glory! Corndogs and french fries. Funnel cake and chocolate milk. BBQ pork and cold beer.

I had some fries left over and decided to try a little experiment with Sophia. She never really gets fries, so i wanted to see what she would do.
Baby want some fries?
The girl figured out fast enough that you don’t hesitate when someone puts fries in front of you. She figured she better make haste before mommy changed her mind.
Take one before mommy changes her mind
And yeah, you could say she liked them. (A big ol’ fried shock to the brain!)
WHOA! Fried food rules!
Of course, after dinner we had to check out all the animals. Sophia doesn’t appear too thrilled here about the sheep, but believe me, she was stoked about the pigs, bunnies and turkeys.
And of course, the animals
Overall, the trip was hilarious and exhausting. Sophia was so thankful for her first taste of Fair food and for us wheeling her around all day that she was all kisses and hugs once the sun set. I think she was just buttering me up to ask for more ride tickets or to stay an extra hour. We’ve all tried that one before…
Kissing under the freaky Fair lights

Didn’t get enough Fair yet? Check out some of Chris’ cool shots here!
