Growing up with Pele and Piano

Piano player Poor Sophia. She doesn’t really have a choice, does she? The girl has been plopped down in front a piano since she could hold her head up. Now that she’s in the banging-on-everything stage, she is thrilled that she’s found something that, when banged upon, brings her so much pleasure and noise! And she seems to be quite a natural at it. (Well, as natural as can be expected for a baby sitting in front of an instrument that much bigger than her own body.)

One of my favorite photos of baby and daddy is of the precious shot below of them sharing a moment together at the piano. It’s really cool to see her actually interested in something that is so important to her dad. Chris has been all about the music since he was a little kid, and it’s really interesting to see how the interests and talents of the parents really do shape the children. It will also be interesting to see if Sophia has inherited some musical ability.

On that note . . .

With the World Cup all around us, poor girl has had to endure many hours of soccer craziness on TV at the Frazier house. Chris and I aren’t too bad about yelling at the refs, but we’ve startled her at least a couple times already with our outbursts. And so it begins.

Up for a little soccer?
I have played soccer for as long as I can remember, all the way up until the end of my first trimester pregnant with Sophia. (Don’t worry, doctor fully endorsed this.) The photo above is of Sophia at just one month old visiting mommy’s indoor soccer team. Despite the fact that she’s visably asleep, can’t you just tell how interested she is in this fine sport already?

I’ve talked to her about how much fun she’ll have when she’s old enough to play AYSO and how mommy will teach her all the essential skills, like how to slide tackle most effectively without getting a thigh raspberry and how to make sure you don’t always get the call, even if you’re much taller than your opponent (Because let’s face it, we already know she’s gonna be tall.).

Along with musical talent, it will also be interesting to see if Sophia has inherited some physical ability. And I also wonder if she’ll even like playing piano or soccer. She’ll have to endure at least a couple years of piano lessons and a season or two of soccer practice before we rule anything out. You can’t make your kid a little mini-me, but you sure can encourage him or her to be interested in the things you love. But Chris and I already joke about what her future hobbies will actually turn out to be — our little chick drummer or girly ballerina or computer programmer or avid reader. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
