Getting away from it all

The Tide is High Chris’ mom has a little place up in Big Bear* that we go when we need to get away but don’t have the time or money for a real full-blown vacation (um, always?). It has been our saving grace to have had this getaway for the entirety of our married life. So we decided, since we had gone up last Easter to recuperate after the craziness of Chris’ job as a pastor, that it would be a fun tradition of sorts to go up again this Easter.

Last Easter I was pregnant. This Easter Sophia got to enjoy it all outside the womb. We did go up once in November when Sophia was only two months old and I was still on maternity leave, but she slept the pretty much the whole time. This time, she got to take it all in. She LOVED the lake, which was as high as I’ve ever seen it. A girl after her mom’s own heart. I can never get enough of watching the light dance on bodies of water. Oh, how I miss living at the beach. She could have cared less about her pink chapped Dutch-girl cheeks, and would have stayed out there all day. But mom was cold.

We had such a great time relaxing. Probably the most vacation-y trip to Big Bear we’ve ever had, as the cable was not working and it forced us to *gasp* play cards, read and take lots of walks! It was perfect, and we actually told Chris’ mom not to fix the cable. I say, when you go the mountains, you should really go to the mountains. We want to teach Sophia that slowing down and relaxing are important parts of life, even if she doesn’t quite understand yet.

Sophia even got to practice her dancing and bathe in the kitchen sink. Oh, the great things you get to experience while on vacation!

* By the way, Chris’ mom rents the place out for ridiculously cheap, if you are interested in slowing down in the mountains, too. Drop me a line!
